In this course we teach you how to create admin reports with React using a query builder. Admin reporting is a broad topic, and getting started can be overwhelming.

In five modules, we cover configuration of the query builder, setting up a server, displaying data in a grid, chart, and map, as well as some more advanced uses of the query builder. It's about three hours long and comes with code samples.

The course is taught by Jake Boone, who uses React Query Builder in real, mission-critical applications for a large engineering and construction firm.

In this course, we'll be using React Query Builder to create admin reports with complex filtering, bulk editing, data grids, charts, and maps.

# Server setup (part 1)

If your application is still running on <http://localhost:3000>, you can go to the terminal and cancel the execution by pressing `Ctrl+C`. We'll no longer need the development server after this lesson.

## Creating a server

To create a server that will host our application, we'll use [Heroku](https://www.heroku.com/) since they have a free tier and it's [easy to set up](https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/getting-started-with-nodejs?singlepage=true). You'll need to install the [Heroku Command Line Interface](https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/heroku-cli#download-and-install) and log in with your Heroku credentials.

First, `cd` up one level to the root `myapp` directory. Then run `heroku create`.

```shell
cd ..
heroku create
```

Next, provision a PostgreSQL database with the following command.

```shell
heroku addons:create heroku-postgresql:hobby-dev
```

Next, create a file called `Procfile` with the following command.

```shell
echo "web: node server/index.js" > Procfile
```

To ignore the `node_modules` folder and our environment variables, create a file called `.gitignore` in the root `myapp` directory with the following contents.

    .env
    node_modules

Now create a `package.json` file using `npm`. Accept the defaults automatically by using the `-y` flag.

```shell
npm init -y
```

In the `package.json` file, update the `"scripts"` section to run our application locally when we run `npm start` and to build it on Heroku when we deploy it.
